Order and Chaos

I am often drawn to patterns and shapes in what I see around me, and I take photographs which home in on details and texture. In the resulting pictures it sometimes takes a minute to recognise what the image is of. It’s a kind of found art in everyday objects and places.

Recently I have been experimenting with settings in Affinity software which apply mirroring or twirl effects. It’s fun! And the images become changed in unexpected ways. Many of the original images were full of often chaotic structure (leaves, fallen blossom, river weed, pebbles), but once the effects are added a strange kind of order starts to appear. All kinds of patterns emerge.

It is interesting to introduce artificial patterns to photographs. When you look at a photograph, you can recognise that it depicts something real, and your eye tries to work out what you are seeing. The mirroring or twirls introduce something that the brain does not initially expect, and the effect is (I hope!) a little disturbing.
